Rise Kujikawa is many things--she's a singer, a dancer, a multitalented idol who got very, very famous very, very fast. On her surface read (the one we see on the television in the very first scene of the game), we learn that Rise is beautiful, peppy and bright. She's got a megawatt smile and a perfect body, and these are the things that helped make her popular as an idol. However, Rise is a lot more than a viewer's first impression, and that's the key part of her storyline in Persona 4.
We first learn that Rise used to be very shy and lonely before she became an idol. When the fame came to her, Rise learned to change and adapt to it, making her at one time very adept at building up a façade. This façade of "Risette" became such an integral protection mechanism that Rise began to lose herself into it--she's the very epitome of "fake it till you make it". Risette is confident, flirtatious, a little bit naughty, cheerful, and incredibly charismatic. Rise thus channels herself into these feelings in order to protect herself from the pressures in fame, but in doing so, Rise believed that she lost 'herself'. The personality of 'Risette' felt fake to Rise, and she became increasingly more bitter towards her career as an idol, until eventually, she cracked, and returned to Inaba to work for her family's tofu shop, in hopes of taking a hiatus that could end up permanent. The Rise we first meet at the shop instead of the commercial is shy, soft spoken and a little morose--this is just another piece of Rise's personality, one of which she can't seem to reconcile.
